Qualcomm reaches a deal with Taiwanese regulators

2 monthes ago - By GSMArena

Qualcomm's legal department is working overtime lately. It's got Apple's lawsuits, Korea Fair Trade Commission's $927 million fine and the European Commission $1.2 billion fine to contest.
Now at least the American firm reached a deal with the Taiwanese Fair Trade Commission. The dispute started back in 2017 and the original fine was $778 million because Qualcomm is refusing to sell chips to OEMs that wouldn't agree to specific patent-licensing terms. 2 monthes ago - By Phone Scoop

Qualcomm has reached an agreement with Taiwan to close an investigation concerning its patent licensing practices. Qualcomm will pay a fine of $93 million, and has promised to invest some $700 million in Taiwan over the next five years. Taiwan had accused Qualcomm of improperly pressuring partners that wanted to use its chips with high royalty rates. Taiwan also accused Qualcomm of cutting Apple a discount on royalties to use its chips over that of competing firms. Qualcomm will have to license patents to its competitors, including Intel and MediaTek, at fair and reasonable rates before it...

2 monthes ago - By Android Headlines

Qualcomm settled its antitrust dispute with the Taiwan Fair Trade Commission, having managed to effectively reduce the original $773 million fine it was hit with last year by nearly 90-percent, the company announced Thursday. Following nearly a year of legal battles , the company successfully concluded the case that first saw it penalized for monopolistic behavior and unfair patent licensing practices with a range of concessions, describing the new agreement as beneficial for both parties. The equivalent of $89 million in fines the chipmaker already paid since last October will be kept by...
